2wd tow rig in Colorado?

I’ve been looking around at trying to find an inexpensive tow rig for the race car. With the potential weight involved of an enclosed trailer I’ve restricted myself to bigger diesel pickups.

I found a decent one that is well under my, already low, budget. I haven’t seen it but it seems good except it is 2WD; I about discarded it for this reason but then I began to think about it some more. I have an Audi Allroad when the weather is nasty. The truck will be used as a tow vehicle in the summer and to haul household junk and project stuff around, also primarily in the summer. I’m not into off-roading, if I go camping I prefer to walk in. So how big of a mistake would it be to get a 2WD truck in Colorado? I know resale value will be lower, but that’s why it’s ~$4k cheaper to begin with.

I’m no expert, but I lived in Denver for > half my life. I’d think as long as you’re buying a truck that you’ll wish you had 4x at some point - nasty days sliding around to work or going to the mountains in the winter. Then again, you could do what a lot of people do and put good tires and load up the back with sand bags in the winter. With the trailer you’ll probably have a lot of weight on the back axle which will help traction - so most advantage of 4x will be when you’re not towing. Just some ideas.

Mark,

Just my Nickel’s worth.

If you would need a 4X4 tow vehicle to make it to the race track, I’ll guarantee that the race will be cancelled:( .

If you need a 4X4 to take a trip to the dump, I’ll guarantee you that you will not be working in the yard, doing HoneyDo’s, etc.

That’s kinda my line of thinking - except there’s this thing between Denver and Colorado Springs called Monument Hill. It has a nasty habit of collecting blizzard conditions in the spring and fall. For instance, it caught me in March when I went to the the NASA event at Pueblo, it also caught my brother in law last weekend as he went to Pueblo for an SCCA race. Other than that hill I think you’re completely right.
