Weight of Race Car

#81

that is part of building a car to a set of rules. If, at this point, you think you will be underweight with max ballast, then don’t remove so much from your car during the build. It is not normal to be in that situation anyway.

I would have to agree and say go ahead and build your car. I recently finished mine and felt the same as you that there was no way I would be able to make weight.

I have a '90 325is with pretty much EVERYTHING removed except for the windows. I weigh 190, run a basketweave wheel / spare tire, try to finish with a half tank of gas, and only 50lbs of ballast. This past weekend at Barber I was 20lbs over min weight at the end of the race.

You could get 50 different people to post and they would have 50 different scenarios. Just build the car and, if possible, weigh it as you go. If not, just leave some stuff in it and then remove as necessary.

Matt, great advice! Sounds like the same answer that I would have typed, given 45 minutes due to my lack-of typing skills.

Just how is your dead horse doing? Perhaps if you beat him some more you might get an answer.

At this point in the rules I don’t see how you can change the min weight. Anyone building a car now should know to be careful of what they remove. I built my car during the first part of '07 and after reading the rules and searching the forums I did two very specific things to account for the weight.

#1. I build a very stout cage with pleanty of safety bracing.
#2. I left in the sound deadening in the trunk.

I have no problem with weight with a 190# driver. I add fuel based on weight not galons. I do run with mostly a full tank but am thinking of adding the spare tire and running less fuel. Some other ideas are the battery. Take a scale with you to walmart or autozone. They weight from 30# to 60# depending on what you get. Fire system, get a real one and install it in the trunk.

Lots of ways to make weight. As others have said, watch what you do during the build, you know the rules and have read about the problems.

I’m a light guy and I’m struggling to think of ways to keep weight in. You’ll see me driving down the track with cast iron wheels, a full leather interior, passengers in the rear seats, listening to the radio and keeping cool with the air conditioning on. Maybe I can install a soft-serve machine

At 172lbs I’m relatively light too I figure. With a coolshirt cooler and a passenger seat I’ll finish a race at ~30lbs over. I could get that by removing the sound deadening in the trunk, but that would just hose up front/rear weight distro so why bother? Maybe you are too worried about this.

This forum is full of threads where I’m worrying about something and folks are telling me to “relax”. They are usually right.

I figure I’ll leave in my rear seat and start selling ride-along tickets for during the race. That oughta do it.

Not so concerned about weight anymore. I picked up a cherry 4 door locally. Got an excellent deal on it.

Will weight of 318is be dropped to make it more competitive? Does any one run 318is’? Will any one (if 318is weight limit is dropped)? Thanks guys, I’m new.

I currently run a 318is, but for DE’s. If they dropped the weight minimum down a bit I think I would run it in the series once I get my comp license, but if the opportunity presents itself, I am also considering an M20 swap due to better torque.

Ditto, Great Blog BTW Thanks
