Transmission fluid overflow

#21

I’m sure I’m tempting fate here, but we pulled my transmission last week to fix a different leak (tranny input shaft seal) and briefly contemplated putting on the breather hose fix, even though mine has never leaked from the breather.

Anyway, we found a length of hose that was a good snug fit on the nub of the breather, and secured it with a small std. hose clamp. (The nub is about 0.5" tall, so it seemed secure enough for the hose clamp to bit into.

So far so good, but what made us stop was that it looked like the hose was going to foul against the bottom of the tranny tunnel, and we weren’t in the mood to expand it with a BFH or rig up a 90 elbow. So, since in my case it wasn’t broken, we didn’t fix it. (See what I mean about asking for it?)

Jeremy, I can’t imagine doing the vent hose project with the trans in the car, and I’d be prepared to spend a bit of time making sure you had clearance to route the house when it goes back together. Just my .02 anyway.

We recently did this and used a hose clamp to make sure it stayed on. It may not be required if the hose fit istight. But a tight hose makes installation a bit more work. Also we worked through a hole on the left side of the transmission tunnel. There is a rubber boot that we pulled out and then enlarged the hole a bit. We were then able the use some needle nose pliers to get the hose on and a nut driver to tighten the clamp. Zip ties and a water bottle for a catch container on the top side. Patience is not required but is helpful…

When I had my transmission out during the clutch replacement, I did not see any marks of leakage at the breather hole so I decided not to put in a hose.

The front seal (not the shaft seal) area was wet and I think that’s where my leak is coming from.

I’ll just have to live with the leak or run with only half full tranny case.

I’m bringing this back up, because I intend to finish my overflow setup soon. I currently have the hose connected to the tranny and run into the engine bay, but I am debating the best place and what to use for a catch can. I have considered converting the washer fluid bottle as mentioned. Does anyone have any recomendations for what they used and where I can buy it or any pictures of custom setups? It seems most catch cans I find are for smaller hoses.

I was asking about this today at the shop. And they told me to mushroom the overflow pipe and then simply attach a hose to a catch can. Most use an old oil bottle.
