I’ve been near him on track - even finished in positions close a couple times. I wouldn’t call him reckless. Of course, when someone is faster than I am, I will usually try to figure out a good place on track to let them by without losing time. Then I can follow and learn. Some guys hate to be passed and make it tough on the following car. That will usually up the aggression level a tick.

At IFU, he came storming through the field after the 2nd invert. He passed me in a turn and tracked out a little too early, causing me to drop a couple wheels to make sure we had room. He came and apologized afterwards. Opinions will differ, I suppose.[/quote]

I too have had Johan pass me at CMP. I’d run side-by-side with him any day but he’s too fast and I’m too slow. So it’s kind of not an issue. I would never agree with giving him a “wreckless” label. Aggressive - Sure. But that what you have to be to be up front.

Thanks guys for the congratulations, I’m still pretty high from it. Wow what a great weekend of racing, quite a few “firsts” this weekend one of which is not having to work on the car for a change. Here’s my race report: Missed the Enduro all together as someone I know thought quality family time at home was more important than racing (whatever). Saturdays practice I concentrated on several new things I’d been wanting to try based on my Dads (long time driver/national champion) input and from watching Skeen’s videos. Both really seemed to pay off and the car was sticking like crazy.

After qualifying, Chuck walked over and told me I was outside pole next to Johan. At first I thought he was kidding then thought oh crap now what am I suppose to do, the top 4 or 5 are within tenths. Somehow my nerves were calm for the start of the race and I was lucky enough to take turn one in first. Talk about a weird new experience with nobody in front of you! I lead until a screw up in my momentum out of 10b and Johan got by me under the bridge I think. Almost immediately (maybe a lap or so later) the double yellows were out due to a Thunder Roadster in turn 5 and Condors Accord inside turn one (timing belt failure).

On the restart Johan and I were caught behind someone and out of nowhere Damion and Curran came by us both. I think Damion then got caught behind someone, I found a hole and got by him and Curran by turn 3 I believe. Then began the longest race of my life.
Fortunately for me, Damion, Johan and Curran had a great race and I was able to lead for the rest of it under green.

As far as the exhaust, yes I figured someone would come up with that. You are absolutely right I do need to change it. In fact I had already called Paul to order 3 of them in hopes to have it on by this race. He said he was out of stock and asked me if I could wait until he needed to make a big parts order (guessing to save on freight or some discount). The last I remember, in a drivers meeting at Road Atlanta in fact, we all had a gentleman’s agreement that since it made no dyno difference, we could either swap to it or not. I have not been in a hurry to spend any extra on the car and didn’t figure it would matter unless I was going to the Nationals (or ever got up front). No problem though, hopefully I’ll have it by CMP.

By the way Bill, you too are correct about the non spec right rear quarter and for that matter the left is also buckled. Thanks to you and a certain expensive guardrail at Barber, I guess I’ve got the aerodynamic advantage now. Oh and illegal weight distribution from all the Bondo in the quarters. BMW (Bondo Motor Werks). Hmmm must be the hot set-up, hit me again and maybe I’ll get the track record next time!

Working on the Video……

Sundays Race was ridiculously fun. I drew 54th and I guess determination set in. Curran (2nd place Saturday) started 6th , somehow I caught up to him for the top E30 position. I’ll post video as soon as I can get it done, should be pretty good.

Which is why I made it very clear that what I said to him was said to his face first. What part of that did you not understand?

Greg, I just sent Johan the following email:

"Johan, Nothing personal, but I have criticized your driving style publically on spec e30 and wanted you to know this so that you could defend yourself if you so desire. You will undoubtedly recall your first race in Spec e30 at CMP, I told you your style of driving would cause numerous accidents. That would seem to be the case today.

Again, this is nothing personal, I think you are a great guy but I also think you are very over aggressive as a driver. I am being criticized for calling you out on a board you do not participate in, so I wanted you to know."

Maybe he will come over and say hi.

Hmmmmm, I’m learning more and more about your self quote " Everyone is entitled to my opinion…
But you are a great guy though

Made it back home today and damn, I really can’t even try to explain how much fun I had down there this weekend. That track kicks ass, I really wish it wasn’t 13+ hours away. On top of the track it was nice meeting a bunch of the SE people, you guys have an awesome scene going and I hope the NE can become like that in the near future. Anyways, enough of that, on to the racing:

Enduro: Was in a lowly Miata, but doing a 3 hour stint helped me out for the sprints enormously. Also, thought the esses started a couple hundred feet sooner than they did, turned in and drove straight off the track on my first lap

Saturday: Like Simon, I had a rear caliper stick in practice also. Wore the pads to nothing and scored the rotor. Luckily, something must’ve just gotten stuck in there because it was fine for the rest of the day after I changed pads. Started 4th for the race had an awesome time with Damion, David and Johan. Those guys didn’t let up as much at turn 5 for the Thunder roadster as I did and had gapped me a decent amount, the caution definitely helped me out. Damion and I got a great restart and moved up front. From there, traffic played a big role.

Sunday: Pulled the lucky #6 starting spot, the first of the “free” starting positions, with Laura and Jones right behind me. Battled with Jones for a while and then got a couple cars in between us. Kept catching traffic in bad spots and Walsh, slowly kept creeping up and finally got by me going into 10a. I’ll get the video up soon.

Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to make the March event and I don’t know if my yankee blood can handle Georgia in the summer, but I’ll definitely be back next December, a year wait is going to be tough, see you then though.

Thanks Sean and Simon for comming down to the Southeast.

Sean you are welcome in the Southeast anytime man. It was a pleasure racing with you. I enjoyed watching your video as there was some great closing racing between all of us. It was a really good battle until the incident.

Still need to figure out where that smoke is coming from because its not the motor and it looks like my brake light switch became stuck at some point or did I just throw the switch;) J/K

Sean, that video was nuts… never a dull moment! You channeled a little Mike Skeen there with your 4x4 move on the back stretch! Great driving through the whole video. You had a lot going on!

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a video with so much contact and crazy/stupid moves. When did SE become MA? I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I’m kinda glad I missed this one and am watching from home.

  • Damion, your brake lights have been doing that all year. I remember seeing it at Barber and forgot to tell you after the race. I thought it was on purpose.

That was me who put Sean in the dirt. We talked about it afterwards. The Mee-0tter didn’t get going and I flat didn’t see Sean as I was overly concerned if I was going to punt the car in front of me.

To clarify, that particular incident looked innocent from the video. And you know we’re always looking for a chance to bash miatas on here! :woohoo:

Nice save through the esses!!

You had a couple handfuls of ugly going there and managed to gather it up.

Your video is a pretty good vantage point for seeing the 944-Damion-Johan kerfuffle. Since I wasn’t on the track, I don’t think I am supposed to comment.

I hope you figure out a way to come back next year. You were quite competitive right out of the box!
