R888 Reports/Opinions?

“we didn’t do any back to back testing between ra1’s and 888’s so it’s hard to say how much faster (if any) they are…”

If you didn’t do any scientific testing, I thought it was EASY to say which is faster. You can throw out a hypothesis and no one can refute it!

Sasha

P.S. If the R888’s are a second faster, as someone said, let’s put Skeen down for a 2:17.0!

I ordered two sets of 888’s nearly 2 weeks ago from Sasco and no luck yet. Really hoping they come soon as I have some gorgeous Team Dynamics just waiting for rubber! Besides, the junkyard tires my car came with are less than optimal, shaved or unshaved, in fact I’m not sure they are even round anymore! : )

Has anyone else had problems getting them? Getting concerned here…

I go to order tires for Mid-Ohio in April and as some of you have already mentioned I am getting mixed info on to shave or not. This is what I have been told. When shaved the R888 is quicker for two to three heat cycles and then falls off. When not shaved the R888 is not as quick as when shaved but stays consistent throughout it’s life.

What I don’t know is after shaved and the times fall off do they just step down to where they would be if not shaved or do they fall below that point. Also, how do the shaved vs. unshaved tires do as far as consistency throughout their life? After the shaved tire falls off does it stay consistent?

For the guys with BIG budgets this could be a definite advantage with buying two sets of tires to use one weekend.

Anyone with more info on the subject?

Hey Mike, not sure if I’m going to run R888 in April at Mid Ohio, I still have a fair amount of decent RA1’s left. I might get a shaved set to do back to back testing so we can see how much faster they are. If they do go off after a few heat cycles when shaved that is going to be a very bad characteristic for a spec tire. I’d be surprised if that is the case I thought they used the same compound as the RA1 but different construction. I guess we’ll just have to test and find out ourselves.

I am going to try unshaved 888’s at Road Atlanta this weekend. They are calling for a chance of rain on Saturday, so I guess they will serve as my rain tires, too. I will probably switch up with my RA-1’s at some point to get some comparison times.

#27

We’ll have a few heat cycles on a set of r888’s after this weekend (our second on the set). Whatever you guys do I’d advise against running full treads in a race. At least scrub them down a good bit. We ran the fulls for 3 sessions and they didn’t seem to get any better.

I’ll be running them shaved for sure. Some people say the same things about the Ra-1’s but I’m the kind of guy that will run them down to the cords anyway. I’ll be doing the same on the R888’s.

From experience, the “added consistency” of the full treads is not worth it. If I find the shaved tires falling off by 3 or more seconds I’ll reconsider, but as of right now I will NOT be ordering any fulls.

OK, this is getting crazy, but I’ll go with the official site, “Tread depth can be shaved to maximize dry traction”. If they go “bad” after a few heat cycles that sucks, but traction is a must.

#29

I called Toyo directly.
if you want longer life, don’t shave them. If you want somewhat more traction, shave them. The tread is only 6/32, so shaving to 4/32 shouldn’t hurt much, but less tyre left. I guess they wear out faster than the RA1’s, different compound, and tread pattern adds more traction without shaving.
I’ll have a set of shaved RA1’s to compare during next event.

Any more opinions after RA? Looking to order ASAP.

Michael

Shave them. They are unacceptable at full tread.

#32

I ran them with full tread this weekend at Road Atlanta. No tread squirm at all after my first dry session with them.

I wasn’t able to compare them head-to-head with my RA-1’s due to weather issues, but I will have good comparison data at at CMP next month.

interesting, this the complete opposite of what randy mueller and i experienced running full depth 888’s at vir…switching to shaved 888’s improved our lap times by several seconds/lap in JP’s car…we both felt that the car handled badly with the full depth tires on in the dry…

did you compare the unshaved 888’s to shaved 888’s?

Not yet. I was merely opining to how the unshaved felt. Again, most of you guys have a lot more experience than I do, but the unshaved 888’s felt as good as my RA-1’s.

#35

Bill, Would you say the 888 was mobetta for passing under yeller? B)

Yes, it was much better at passing under yellow than my RA-1’s!
