Its pleasant to dream. NASA is Toyo’s b!tch so I’m shocked we got this far and aren’t scheduled to run their new winter tire next year with the ‘same compound’ as the RA1.
R888 found wanting by SCCA Spec racing...
Lower the cost for ALL racers rather than just the top 5 who get money or free shoes. Recently shopped for tires though and tough to beat the Toyo cost.
Re. the R888 having the same rubber as the RA1. Until it didn’t. If I understand correctly, at one time the R888 had the same compound as the RA1 and then it didn’t. NASA is TOYO’s corporate partner in this. I figure that if NASA was told of a compound change, they’d a told us. So maybe TOYO didn’t tell NASA. Which would a shitty way for a corporate partner to behave.
I also don’t think any spec series would able to leave toyo and stay with nasa. Politics…
Yes, Hoosier contingency is the best.
A GTS3 driver in the MA won 4 fat new hoosiers in a single weekend last year. I think there were only like 5 cars in his class :S.
The PRO-3 group up here in the Northwest have been on the R-888 this year and as a group we’re generally not happy with it. We’ve voiced our concerns to Toyo too that if they don’t bring back the RA1 we’ll probably consider another tire manufacture for our spec tire.
cheers,

I am with Dave on this. Hoosier as a spec tire in Spec e30 is comical. You guys talk about the contigency package but what about the guys who never run up front. Its no diffrent in the R888 in that it cost more and last half as long. I am praying that the RA1 is the only tire we use next year.
Damion, I think your prayer will be answered, the 888 is almost impossible to get in the SE without going to Sasco.
The thing I don’t like about the RA1 is you have to buy them shaved if you want them to last. The 888 tread pattern doesn’t roll over like the RA1 does at full depth.

D you need to be more optimistic. You’d probably qualify for the 2nd place award in most races.

Says who? Have you run them from full tread to cord yourself?
If shaving is the only knock on the RA1, that’s OK with me.
I found shaved vs. unshaved to be a solid 2 seconds a lap on a 2 mile track.

Yea… I had some RA1’s that started as full depth rain tires. I still have them after 3 years of use. They grip for for sh!t but they have plenty of tread left.
My $.02 is:
Only one spec tire for the 2010 season.
The primary consideration when selecting the tire should be low cost racing for all, excluding contingencies. On any given weekend, most racers do not earn a contingency.
