Drain plug set with a 17mm and many others for $12.99. Man I love that place!!![/quote]

Bingo! Good call, Ill be near one tomorrow. Thanks.

-Geegar, good idea too but getting Al to ship something is like getting Robinson to admit he cheats. Or if you prefer: Al is as good at shipping out things on time as he is at playing ping pong (not table tennis) take your choice. :stuck_out_tongue:

BTW: most of the “knowledge” JP has about E30’s is mostly or entirely made up. If you 'll notice next time, when he finishes spouting off “facts” the sentences end with an inquisitive inflection…kind of like a question. Listen for it next time.

I’m pretty sure that the fill plug has to be consistent with the model year of the car or you’re cheating.

It does not say it can be altered and who knows what kind of cheater plugs people could come up with, like a light weight titanium version.

I used an old lug bolt (17mm head) and a pair of vice grips to remove the plug from my trans this weekend when I drained it. Necessity (and being frugal) is the mother of invention.

I was considering getting somebody to weld a 17mm bolt or nut to a piece of flat stock to make a cheap wrench instead of paying Pelican’s $25, but for $13 I’ll go to Harbor Freight and get that set.

Jim -

You forgot to mention the illegal chassis lightening advocated by Andrew (cleverly disguised as a “diff fill hole” drilled/hidden in the spare tire well).

Steve D.

PS - Now, if that same hole is made in order to insall a catch tank…:S

I noticed this too, when he said “I like girls?”

The diff fill hole could also compromise the integrity of the rear crash structure of the chassis.

Can we get a rule clarification please?

Back to the serious side of this issue.

Getrag did indeed provide different trannys on E30s. The type of filler plug is an indicator of what tyoe of fluid was used. Some used ATF. I think these were identified by the male plug and a green tag. Why they did that I have no idea. I think it had to do with cold shift charateristics.

Having said all of that, I think Redline MTL and/or Amsoil MTF are both fine products to use in these trannys regardless of what kind of plug one has or what type of fluid was installed at the factory.

Easy now. Not only is his wife cute, but she brings parts for JP’s friends.
