New Spec E30 car builders introduce yourselves

Jon Strine - Carlisle, PA.

I have a 2-door 1989 325i that is stock right now. I have a few "reliability" issues to take care of shortly (head gasket and oil pan gasket). Suspension is largely ordered and sitting in the garage. Very shortly I’ll begin the process of installing the suspension and repairing the minor issues. I hope to get the car stripped and have a cage put in over the winter. Brakes and the like should come next spring/summer. If the timing doesn’t exactly work out, no big deai, since the car will be used for schools and similar events during 2007 where I can hopefully work up to a comp license in 2008 for racing (obviously having the cage by then). Oh, and I’m working up the courage to tackle the rear subframe and trailing arm bushings. I hear they can be quite tough.

I appreciate the help and advice from everyone so far. The folks I talked to at Summit Point recently were great and gave some plenty of advice. Also, with at least two other new builders in the central PA area, is there any chance we can get together sometime to meet over drinks and swap advice? One thing I need to find is a good place to have some welding done. I will have rear sway bar reinforcements that need welded and I have neither the equipment nor experience. Anyone have any good places in central PA they can recommend?

Look forward to seeing you all on track.

Jon-

A get together sounds like fun, my brother and law and I seem to motivate each other with our competitive trash talking. He is in E-Town, and I am in Wrightsville. We are both in the process of installing suspension and brakes while doing the routine maintenance stuff along the way.

I can handle the reinforcements if needed, but also have a friend that is much more talented with a welder than I am. He is in York, and does the work at his house. He will most likely be doing our cages over the winter. If you’re interested, tackling a third cage around the same time would make the job more cost effective for everyone.

Send me an e-mail at sloercher[at]bh-ba[dot]com and we can talk.

I’m working on a Spec E30 candidate in Southern California. Red '89 2 door. New valve job, head gasket, hoses, belts, complete new suspension is in the process of being installed, including sub-frame, trailing arm, and control arm bushings, new control arms, tie rod ends, stainless brake lines, powerslot rotors, short shifter and new clutch, strut tower brace, IE camber plates (damn them!), plug wires, etc.!

I expect to have the car back on the road in the next two weeks and ready for DE’s. This car is for sale. All it will need to compete is harness, cage, seats, electrical cutoff, and fire ext. Will finish to a buyers specification.

90 325is black. Gutted, ssk installed, SSlines, brakes done, all the maintenance stuff was done by PO, harness bar, and seats installed (will do cage in winter), suspension just installed. To do’s left, brake cooling kit, diff cover, assorted odds and ends like front lip spoiler. Car will debut at Oct BMW DE at Road Atlanta. Hope to be ready by next spring. Can’t wait to drive it!

How do you drive 4 racecars at the same time? I think you need to give one to me.

Update: celebrate with me. My car is now road legal and I drove it for about 30 minutes last night. I’m impressed with the amount of power this thing has compared to my same vintage, expensive-engine-rebuild Audi GT I just sold. I think I’m gonna like this.
3 weeks 'till Summit!

Wait 'til you flog it on the track! I had trepidation after jettisoning my e36 M3 (join the club, right), but after the first couple of turns at VIR, I didn’t miss the M3 at all. It was especially joyful to drive the piss out of the SpecE30 and know that I wouldn’t shed a tear if I bent a body panel while putting into a tire wall. Driving a capable car that’s not precious is a real treat.

Word

I too traded up from an s52 powerplant to the not so precious (but oh so fun to drive) e30.
