[quote]10. King Tut - sorry to hear about your bum tranny - based on my experience I would try a local BWM repair shop or pick & pull yard- ask around the local BMWCCA or autocross clubs - someone should know a good source for a used unit that you can inspect before you buy (and ship across the country).

It’s hot as hell in Florida as well, but that doesn’t stop me from doing 6 hours of work on Saturday. Keep at it. I have sourced 2 transmissions so far that I will take a chance on. I mean for $200 it can’t hurt. At least I will be very familiar with removing the exhaust, shifter, and driveshaft now. I went ahead and put 3 out of my 4 wheels on today along with my stud kit so I could feel better about the car. Oh yeah UPS managed to lose the 4th wheel and tire in Jacksonville so I won’t get it till Monday. . I was really frustrated yesterday, but today I feel alot better knowing I can get another tranny relatively cheap, and I still have stuff to do. I was just really looking forward to driving it yesterday since I’ve owned it for 2 months and its been on 4 jack stands the whole time.

Need a 3.90 diff if anyone has one laying around… Chuck

#23

Chuck -

What you really want is a 4.10… Delivered to you at the track this weekend.

Steve D.

#24

He can pick it up from you on Sunday, right?

#25

Thanks for the kind offer, Steve, however, I have a 410 r&p sitting here. Since I run an “e” motor, I can’t run that short of a gear. Want to try a 3.9 since I am running a 3.73. Chuck

Steve, what would you want for that 4.10? I think it would be perfect for a LeMons car.

I’ve got three 3.73LSD’s and two cars. Maybe we could work a swap?

#27

Man, why wasn’t I lurking when this was originally posted! You could have sold the diff to me and made money to boot!

Matt

Did you really want my 3.25 LSD? If so, sorry I missed the chance to sell it to you… didn’t think anyone here would want that highway/fuel economy ratio.

If you really need one, I know a kid in Deltona, Florida who will probably sell it to you - still packed up in MY box…

Jim

Just saw this post. I’d be happy to trade you. I’ll bring it this weekend and you can owe me a 3.73 diff.

Well Jim…reason why I lurk here and not post (until now) is not only do I not run a spec e30, but I don’t even own an e30! But I DO have a 2002 with a turbo m20b25, and have a e30 rear subframe that I’ll be grafting in sooner or later. PM me his email if you want…I may attempt to take it off his hands. At least I know it will be packed well!

My what a small world.

The used 3.73diff that I bought seems to be from the same Jose. I didn’t measure the ratio, but I noted that the clutches are slipping at 30ftlbs. I bet that I have the same darn diff. Sigh.

#32

You mean you bought your own diff on ebay?

Wow, forget the six degrees of separation. It’s more like one degree of masturbation.

#33

Negative.

But the diff that l8Apex sent back to Jose might be the same diff that I bought from Jose. I mean how many LSD diffs can the guy own? If I’m sufficiently motivated I’ll pull the diff tonight and check the ratio.

#34

You don’t have to pull the diff to check the ratio. Just get the rear wheels off the ground. 41 turns of the drive shaft should be 11 turns of the wheel for a 3.73.

Ranger - you gotta be kidding me…

Jose Florse - Deltona Florida

Start your paypal dispute process now - Paypal will be very familiar with him…

I sent him a nice note the day that Fed Ex confirmed delivery to his doorstep - he claimed to have already sold in on Craigslist…

I guess not… sorry.

Just count the output turns vs input turns - should be in the 3.23 to 3.25 neighborhood… I wasn’t smart enough to check the break away torque - I just knew the ration was wrong…

It’s the right ratio. Whew, that would have been just too much.

So who knows something about friction additives? I need to almost double the clutch power on this thing. I’d like to limp thru the rest of the year with it.

#37

are friction additives legal?

#38

Ranger wrote:

Other than being illegal and likely un-tech-able, I don’t know about additives.

Did you test breakaway using the rules procedure (w/in 30 minutes of coming off-track). I don’t know how heat affects the friction/breakaway. Should a cold diff break away at a lower or higher torque?

Steve D.

#39

Heat will cause LS to loose lockup. Don’t know if I want friction modifiers in my R/P:ohmy:

There is a shop here in B’ham that does the lockup modification…would highly recommend. He did mine two years ago and it still chirps tires when turning sharp in the paddock. Chuck

Nowhere in the rules does it permit modifying the LSD. If the shop manual prescribes “lockup modification” then it’s fair game.

If the breakaway rule is addressed in the future, it would be nice to add a “cold breakaway” number since the only way to test compliance now is within 30 minutes of a track session. I have a pet peeve about rules for which compliance can’t be tested before hitting the track.
