Anyone else want some plugs to seal steering rack?

#21

ok, I picked up another handful today, send me an email and/or paypal if you want a set, thanks

So - I have mine - they are going in this weekend. I plan to drain the rack, put in new PS fluid and try to flush out as much of the old stuff and replace it with the new stuff. Any thoughts on how to do that?

Also, I ordered from Pegasus Racing a box of 14mm crush washers, and a box of 16mm crush washers. I’ll send one of each of them to anyone who wants them for a beer the next time I see you at the track. If you live in Seattle, I’ll take my chances (I live in Florida). Just e-mail me your address, and I’ll throw them in an envelope. ETA on them is Friday.

Damn. Gone. I ordered a package of 5 of each.

If someone else wants to be nice…

I think the way to go is to run the rack close to dry. If it’s still on the car, just remove the hoses, turn the wheel lock to lock a couple times to pump most of the fluid out of the rack, and cap it off. There are many other opinions on this though.

All I got payment for have been shipped as far as I know. If you’re still looking for a set, and I forgot to respond to your request or something, just send me another email. Just two sets left.

I got mine the other day.

Thanks

picked up a few more sets because of a few late requests, I’ll have a couple extra if anyone is interested.

BTW…

I did the install. I filled the rack all the way up and capped it off. Wrong.

Run it dry (turn wheel left and right a few times, then cap it).

If you leave it full, the steering will be fine at speed, but it will be unmovable at low speeds (paddock) after a bit of a turn. Felt like I had a mattress stuck in the wheel wells on both sides, and had to do a few 100 point turns to get where I wanted. I bled the extra out - 100% fine. I also did a fluid change before I capped it - messy, but now it is sealed with new fluid.

Hope that helps!

I ran into the same problem. With the rack full I had to “pump” the steering wheel to get it to fully turn. Once I drained the rack life is good.

Channing - If you still have some, please let me know. Thanks,

Andy

If not - http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72123&highlight=steering

And - if you install this - you MUST lift for me if I am within 500 feet of your bumper while this is installed

Seriously - Channing sold one set to me - I told him to stick his head in here and offer them to our guys - I don’t know the dude - but it was cheap and easy - so I don’t think the chances of him responding are good. I found him and this new deal on www.e30tech.com - good luck.

i don’t think you’ll have to worry, with an untested racecar at homestead ill be lucky to make it 500 feet past start finish.

I’ve got a couple of plugs I can send you. They use an allen head instead of a standard wrench, but other than that are the exact same thing shown in this thread.

I will be out of town until Wednesday. If you want them and can wait let me know. $15 shipped priority mail.

I wouldn’t worry too much, Gary was still working on his car one Saturday night last June before sticking it on the trailer and showing up Sunday morning to race with us. Testing? Ha! That’s what qualifying is for B)

I have seen these but it was a full piece that allowed fluid to move from side to side. like a loop. Is that not needed?

If you disconnect the lines, turn the rack lock-to-lock a few times to pump the fuid out, and install the plugs, you will be all set. I don’t see a significant advantage for looping or plugging, but plugging is a little cleaner installation, IMO.

That is (I think) what I put a link to. Not sure it it loops or not. I don’t have that - I have the plugs.

Like Steve says - either is fine - plugs are cleaner. Just be sure to drain the rack - I got both kinds of advice at other places and went out first time with the rack filled to the brim. Fine on the track, but IMPOSSIBLE to turn in the paddock. Your range of motion is nothing on the track compared to parking. I drained the rack - it’s perfect. just keep it moving while you’re turning - you’re set.

great. thanks for all the info.
