2007 HANS Mandating for NASA

#21

Bruce - great info, thanks. My understanding on the sternun straps is that it is a definite "NO" with a 4 point system, but with a 5-6 point it is OK and may be preferred with HANS. http://s2.pegasusautoracing.com/2006/020.pdf

There is considerable difference of opinion on this issue, but with regard to neck injuries, my submarine belt (5-6 points of attachment) would have to fail for the sternum strap to be an issue with neck injury. I’m guessing if that happens, I am SOL anyway (and my ba## will be history!) With regard to track workers, etc., the quick release on the sterum strap should not add more than a second of release time. We have practiced exits and can consistently get out in 15 seconds including window net removal, belt release, and main power off.

I think this is a good discussion to have, as we all want to avoid a catastrophic event at the track. I would be willing to put new harnesses in the car if I can be convinced that my setup is dangerous, but I am not sure that is the case at present.

Thanks for your contributions to this discussion.

Thanks Bruce - looks like I will at least look at the integrity of my sub setup.
And consider taking a carpet knife to the sternum strap
